Power for the rooms that cannot go dark

McKinney Electrical is a union shop of 120 electricians, foremen and apprentices. We self-perform data halls, hospital and lab power, tower fit-out and plant controls for general contractors and owners' reps across western Pennsylvania.

What we self-perform

Four kinds of work, one crew culture

Our own electricians do the work we bid, from the first conduit to the last test record.

  • A long hall of dark switchgear cabinets with indicator lights under fluorescent strips

    Mission-critical power

Medium-voltage tie-ins, generator paralleling, UPS and PDU distribution, built in planned shutdown windows.

  • An office building facade at dusk with rows of lit windows

    Towers and core and shell

Risers, bus duct, tenant metering and life-safety power for new high-rise and mid-rise buildings.

  • An industrial control cabinet with blue terminal blocks and neatly dressed wires

    Plants and controls

Motor control centers, drives and panel work for plants that can only stop on a schedule.

  • An open-plan office with exposed ceiling ducts and track lights, people working at desks

    Fit-out and service

Tenant floors, lighting controls and service agreements for owners who want the same crew back.

Named projects

Recent work, by name

GCs and owners' reps ask who built it. Here is the list, with what we did on each.

  • Data center

    Ridgeline Data Hall, phase 2

Medium-voltage tie-in, generator paralleling and PDU distribution, built in two planned shutdown windows.

  • Lab and research

    Confluence Life Sciences Tower

Core and shell power through the riser, then lab distribution and essential-power panels floor by floor.

  • Healthcare

    Mercer Street Medical Pavilion

Essential-power branches and transfer switches, phased around operating rooms that stayed in service.

  • Industrial plant

    Keystone Rolling Mill, line 3

New motor control centers and drives, landed over a planned outage and tested before the line restarted.

  • Parking and site

    Eastgate Mixed-Use Garage

Garage lighting, EV-ready conduit and site power for a deck above street-level retail.

Apprenticeship

We train the electricians we will need in five years

Apprentices work beside journeymen from the first week and go to class on a set schedule. Jaylen Scales runs the program and reads every application himself.

  • Paid at every step of the five years

  • Evening classes with the joint training committee

  • Rotations through service, fit-out and controls crews

  • OSHA 10 before the first day on a site

How a job runs

From bid set to closeout, in the order your schedule needs

  1. 01

    Step 1: Bid review

We read the drawings and specs, list our assumptions and send our questions in one batch before the bid date.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Submittals and prefab

Gear, shop drawings and prefabricated racks are scheduled against the long-lead items, not after them.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Shutdown plan

Every outage gets a written plan: who is on it, what is isolated and what is tested before power comes back.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Install and inspect

Foremen keep daily logs, and inspections are booked as each area is ready.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Commissioning and closeout

Test records, as-builts and the O&M binder are handed over area by area, not in one pile at the end.

From the owner's side of the table

What project teams say after closeout

“Our switchover window was nine hours and they finished with time to retest. The foreman's daily log was the first thing I read every morning.”

Gary S.Project manager, general contractor

“They flagged a feeder conflict at the submittal stage, not in the ceiling. That conversation cost us an afternoon instead of a change order.”

Patrycja V.Owner's representative

“The same four foremen ran every phase of the pavilion. I never had to explain the site rules twice.”

Where our crews work

Western Pennsylvania, out from the Pittsburgh core

Crews report to the shop on Smallman Street, so jobs inside these counties are staffed from here. Beyond them we look at each bid on its own.

Allegheny County

  • Pittsburgh
  • Monroeville
  • Moon Township
  • Bethel Park
  • McKeesport
  • Wexford

Butler County

  • Cranberry Township
  • Butler

Washington County

  • Canonsburg
  • Washington

Westmoreland County

  • Greensburg
  • Murrysville

Beaver County

  • Beaver
  • Aliquippa

We do not staff jobs more than about two hours' drive from the Pittsburgh shop, or in the Erie or Philadelphia areas, without talking through travel and lodging first.
